The Ellen Key School (formerly: 5th Polytechnic High School " Oleg Koschewoi " ) is an integrated secondary school with upper secondary school in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain at Rüdersdorfer Straße 20.

building

Ellen Key School building, summer 2019

The school complex was built from 1953 to 1954 and designed by the architect Anton Gerber in the style of the architecture of national traditions . Anton Gerber was recruited by Hermann Henselmann from West Berlin . Since there was a shortage of architects and engineers in the GDR, architects who had worked on structures from the time of National Socialism were also recruited. Gerber had helped build Hermann Göring's Carinhall as an architect .

The building consists of a neoclassical three-wing complex with a forecourt. The middle part of the building is four-story and connected to the two-story wings by open pillared halls. The entrance has a representative design with a portal balcony that rests on columns and pillars. The auditorium has since been renovated. The complex represents an outstanding example of building culture in the early days of the GDR and is now a listed building .

In 1998 the school got a 4 m high sculpture wall.

Today the school is equipped with modern science rooms and computer rooms.

history

The school was opened in 1953 as a polytechnic high school with 10 classes. On October 18, 1967, the school was named after Oleg Koschewoi (1926–1943), a young Soviet partisan who led an uprising against the Wehrmacht in the city of Krasnodon with some friends and was executed by the German invaders at the age of 16. Koschewoi was the main character in Alexander Fadeev's novel The Young Guard (Молодая гвардия), which was part of school reading in the GDR.

In the spring of 1974, the young and Thalmann pioneers of the school, together with the pioneer friendship "Oleg Koschewoi" of the 681st high school in Moscow, made an appeal to all students of the socialist community of states to prepare for the 30th anniversary of the liberation from Hitler's fascism (May 9th).

In 1991 the school was converted into the 2nd Friedrichshain Comprehensive School , and in 1993 the upper level of the 1st Friedrichshain Comprehensive School was affiliated as a branch. Students with learning disabilities have been integrated since 1995. In the summer of 1997, the building was assigned to the school for the speech-impaired and secondary levels I and II can now be taught at one location.

On May 8, 1998, the school was renamed after Ellen Key , a Swedish reform educator and women's rights activist. In 2000, for the first time, cooperation with industry and career orientation were laid down in the school profile.

Since the school year 2010/2011, the Ellen Key School has been an integrated secondary school with an upper level .

In the summer of 2011, the high school graduation ceremony was hit by a fraud scandal. Dussmann and 1. FC Union Berlin helped out.

School profile

The school, which has four to six classes depending on the number of students, has set itself a quote from Ellen Key as its motto:

"Time calls for personalities, but it will call in vain until we let the children live and learn as personalities."

The secondary school would like to prepare comprehensively and at an early stage for work and studies. It works on the principle: I challenge you because I respect you. Foreign languages and professional orientation are closely linked.

The Ellen Key School is involved in the Eastside Campus. Founded in the spring of 2013, the aim of the Eastside Campus is to offer a comprehensive yet individual educational and leisure offer for the children in the area and to integrate the relationship between school and extracurricular education into the experiences of the children and their parents. Reliable educational biographies without development-hindering breaks and a close neighborhood relationship are in the foreground. The network of day-care centers, schools, independent and municipal bodies and companies allows the development and development of (extra) school networks and thus contributes to a balanced educational landscape in our neighborhood in Berlin-Friedrichshain.

At the school, the secondary school entrance qualification , technical college entrance qualification (school part) and the Abitur are possible after two or three years.

The upper secondary school educates an average of 250 students.

languages

The school offers classes in English, French and Spanish.

Since the 2014/2015 school year, a class with bilingual English lessons has been set up in the 7th year.
