Elliott Nugent (born September 20, 1896 in Dover , Ohio , † August 9, 1980 in New York City , New York ) was an American film director , writer and actor .

Life

As a child of a family of actors, Elliott Nugent took to the stage at a very young age . Relatively him the jump to the successful Broadway , in addition to his career as an actor, he was also known as the author of plays and screenplays operates. Together with his father, the then well-known actor, writer and theater producer JC Nugent (1868-1947), he wrote a number of plays in which he then appeared. From 1925 Elliott Nugent worked as an actor in Hollywood and often played boyish, serious-looking characters in leading and supporting roles. He appeared in two films with Greta Garbo (1929 and 1930), alongside Lon Chaney senior in the horror film The Unholy Three and with Marion Davies in the comedy Not So Dumb (both 1930).

From the early 1930s, Nugent directed films and largely ended his film career as an actor, although he continued to play smaller film and television roles (often in his own films) until the 1950s. His genre were mainly comedies with known comedians like Harold Lloyd , Danny Kaye , Bob Hope and Bing Crosby . Occasionally he filmed serious material, so in 1949 he was responsible for the first sound film adaptation of The Great Gatsby . Based on his own play, he made the comedy The Male Animal in 1942 with Henry Fonda as a university teacher and Olivia de Havilland as his wife.

Increasing alcohol problems contributed to the fact that Nugent did not turn any more films from the beginning of the 1950s, but operated as a director and producer of plays. From 1921 until his death in August 1980 at the age of 83, he was married to the actress Norma Lee (1899–1980), who died just four months after him. The couple had three children.
