Vegetative characteristics

Elliottia pyroliflora grows as a more or less spreading shrub that reaches heights of 0.5 to 3 meters. This year's twigs have bark that is bare or sparsely hairy and green to blue-green in color . The bark of older branches is torn and copper-colored.

The alternate or spirally arranged at the ends of the branches leaves are divided in a 1 to 4 millimeters long petiole and leaf blade. The simple leaf blade is 1.5 to 5 centimeters long and 0.6 to 1.4 centimeters wide, elliptical to rounded-lanceolate with a wedge-shaped blade base. The leaf margins are smooth. Both leaf sides are colored blue-green.

Five-fold flower with a clearly curved style.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period includes the months of June and July. The terminal trugdoldige inflorescence has a length of 2 to 4 centimeters and contains either only one or two to three flowers. With a length of 10 to 15 millimeters, the lanceolate bracts have a smooth edge. The 5 to 10 millimeter long flower stalks stand over one or two bracts .

The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope. The five sepals are fused and end in 7 to 10 mm long and 2 to 4 mm wide lanceolate calyx teeth with a pointed upper end and, especially in the lower area, a ciliate edge. The five pink to copper colored petals are almost elliptical with a length of 10 to 15 millimeters. There are two circles with four or five stamens each. The stamens are hairless and the anthers are 1.7 to 2 millimeters in size. The durable stylus is bent or curved back 10 to 12 mm long.

The 5 to 8 millimeter long, bald capsule fruit contains five to six seeds with a diameter of 0.5 to 0.8 millimeters.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Elliottia pyroliflora includes the north and west of Canada and the USA. In Canada, the species occurs in British Columbia. In the United States, they are found in Alaska, Washington, and Oregon.

Elliottia pyroliflora thrives in cool, humid climates with abundant rainfall. This species is found in moist coniferous forests as well as in adjoining areas at altitudes from 0 to 2500 meters. Mainly the banks of rivers and swampy areas are populated in these areas.

Systematics

This species was created in 1832 by August Gustav Heinrich von Bongard under the name Cladothamnus pyroliflorus in Mémoires de l'Académie Imperiale des Sciences de St.-Pétersbourg. Sixième Série. Sciences Mathématiques, Physiques et Naturelles , 2 (2), p. 155, plate 1 first described . It was placed in 1978 under the name Elliottia pyroliflora by Scott W. Brim and Peter Francis Stevens in Journal of the Arnold Arboretum , 59 (4), p. 336 in the genus Elliottia . Other synonyms for Elliottia pyroliflora (Bong.)
