Ellsworth is with 3,120 inhabitants (as of 2010) County Seat of Ellsworth County in the US state of Kansas . The city is located on the Smoky Hill River in the center of the Great Plains . The distance to Wichita , the largest city in the state, is approximately 130 km in a southeast direction. The tenth largest city of Salina is about 50 km to the east .
history
Ellsworth was founded in 1867 on the site of the former Fort Ellsworth when it was relocated as Fort Harker a mile to the northeast. The early years of the place are marked by frequent clashes with the Cheyenne and the dominance of various gunslingers .
