Elmer Otis Wooton

Elmer Otis Wooton (born September 19, 1865 in Kokomo, Indiana , † November 20, 1945 in Arlington, Virginia ) was an American botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Wooton ". The abbreviation “ Woot. " in use.

Live and act

Wooton went to New Mexico State University (NMSU) as a professor of chemistry and botany in 1890 . The New Mexico College of Agricultural and Mechanical Arts had just been re-established, from which the name "NMC Herbarium" for the university herbarium is derived. Wooton began collecting plants in the area as early as the spring of 1890, and during his roughly two decades at New Mexico State University built the herbarium to a respectable size. In 1910 he became deputy curator of the National Herbarium. In 1911 he went to Washington, DC , where he worked for the Department of Agriculture (USDA) until 1935.

Dedication names

The plant genera Wootonella Standl. and Wootonia Greene are named after him.
