Elwin Friedrich (born July 25, 1933 in Amriswil ; † February 2, 2012 in Grancia ) was a Swiss ice hockey player who first played as a striker and later as a defender.

Career

Friedrich played for Grasshoppers Zurich , Zürcher SC and Lausanne HC - in 1959 as a winger in an attacking formation with Fritz Naef and Michel Wehrli - before moving to ACBB Paris . In 1959 he won the Spengler Cup with ACBB Paris . After moving to HC Diavoli Milan - when he was not eligible to play for Switzerland - he moved to Villars HC , with whom he became Swiss champion in 1963 . The Amriswiler also changed his preferred position and from then on appeared as a defender. He later played as a player-coach at HC Lugano , with whom he was promoted to the top division in 1971, and HC Ascona . Friedrich stayed in Ascona for more than ten years before ending his active career.

Friedrich was considered the first Swiss player to have a hard slap shot . This was previously unknown in Switzerland; Dave Maguire , Canadian player-coach of Zürcher SC, had taught him this in 1953.

International

Friedrich was a participant in the Swiss national ice hockey team at the Olympic Winter Games in 1964 and at the Ice Hockey World Championships from 1961 to 1963. In total, he played 54 international games for Switzerland. He played his last games in the 1967 World Cup when Switzerland was relegated to the C group. He also played in the Swiss national hockey team.
