Emer Costello (* 3. September 1962 as Emer Malone ) is an Irish politician of the Irish Labor Party . She was from June 2009 to June 2010, the Lord Mayor of Dublin ( Lord Mayor of Dublin ) and 2012-2014 Member of the European Parliament .

Life

Costello attended the Dundalk Institute of Technology and University College Dublin . In the latter, she received her Bachelor of Arts and a Higher Diploma in Education . Originally from Blackrock , Dundalk , County Louth , Costello moved to Dublin on May 1, 1980 to work in the main post office of the state postal company An Post .

In 2003 she was elected to Dublin City Council in a by-election to fill the vacant seat of her husband, Joe Costello . He had resigned his mandate there in order to avoid a dual mandate in addition to his parliamentary activities. In 2004 and 2009, Emer Costello was confirmed in office. After serving as Vice Mayor of Dublin from June 2008 to June 2009, she was elected Lord Mayor of the city in June 2009. Gerry Breen ( Fine Gael ) was appointed as her successor in this office on June 28, 2010 .

In February 2012, she moved up for her party colleague Proinsias De Rossa in the European Parliament . In April 2012, her party colleague Padraig McLoughlin occupied her vacant seat on the city council.

After the 2014 European elections , she left parliament.

EU parliamentarian

Costello chairs the Delegation for relations with the Palestinian Legislative Council and is a member of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee and the Conference of Delegation Chairs . As a deputy, Costello is on the Development Committee , the Special Committee against Organized Crime, Corruption and Money Laundering and the delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean .
