Emerson Newton-John

Emerson Newton-John (born September 26, 1974 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American racing driver .

Career

Newton-John began his motorsport career in 1987 in karting , in which he was active until 1992. In 1993 he switched to formula racing . He took part in a race of the Japanese Formula Toyota and completed test drives in the Japanese Formula 3 championship . In 1995 he competed in the French Formula Renault . In 1996 he gained experience in touring car racing and drove a race in the Renault Spider Eurocup . In 1997 he returned to North America and drove in the US Barber Formula Dodge . He spent the following two years again in European touring car series. In 1998 he won the French Renault Megane Cup . In 1999 he took part in individual races of the Renault Clio Eurocup and a race of the Spanish Renault Clio Cup .

In 2000 Newton-John moved to Australia. He was initially 14th in the Tasmanian Formula Holden Cup. In 2001 he drove in Formula Holden, the drivers 'championship of which was also classified as the Australian Drivers' Championship . However, he did not play the entire season. He was on the podium four times and finished fifth in the Australian drivers' championship. He completed his last race on September 10th. One day later, the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , which were indirectly responsible for the premature end of his formula racing career, occurred . Two of Newton-John's main sponsors lost their capital in the ensuing stock market turmoil, and other sponsors from him withdrew because the future financial situation was not foreseeable.

Newton-John finally oriented himself towards NASCAR and finally completed a race in the ARCA Racing Series in 2001 and a race in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 2002 , which was overshadowed by technical problems. Newton-John was not involved in racing for the next ten years. Among other things, he founded an initiative against breast and prostate cancer .

In 2012 Newton-John returned to professional racing. For Fan Force United , he took part in the Freedom 100 , the Indy Lights race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway . He qualified eighth. In the race he retired after four laps in a major accident and was classified 17th. In the further course of the season he contested another Indy Lights race.

In 2014, Newton-John took part in a race in the ARCA Racing Series. In addition, he was initially registered in the Indy Lights for the Freedom 100, but was not used.

Personal

Emerson Newton-John's stepfather was the American actor Jeff Conaway , his mother is the British actress Rona Newton-John . His half-siblings are bass guitarist Brett Goldsmith and actress Tottie Goldsmith . His aunt is the actress Olivia Newton-John . One of his great-grandfathers was the German mathematician and physicist Max Born , who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1954.

Newton-John is married with two children.

Others

Newton-John is named after the racing driver Emerson Fittipaldi . Fittipaldi was the Formula 1 world champion in the year Newton-John was born. Newton-John and Fittipaldi met at a race in the Indy Car World Series in the late 1980s . When Fittipaldi won the Indianapolis 500 in 1989 , Newton-John stood near Victory Lane and caught a hat that Fittipaldi had thrown at him.
