Emil Merz

Emil Merz (born August 4, 1856 in Rheinbischofsheim ; † February 3, 1904 in Kassel ) was a German engineer and director of the city's gas and water works in Kassel.

Emil Merz, son of the grand-ducal judge-martial of Baden, J. Merz, attended the elementary and high school in Villingen until 1869. Then he attended high school in Karlsruhe . In autumn of the same year he and a few others were selected to attend the Friedrichsschule together with the Hereditary Grand Duke of Baden Friedrich II .

From 1873 to 1878 he studied engineering at the TH Karlsruhe and became a member of the Germania fraternity (now Teutonia ). He then did his military service in the Baden infantry regiment in Constance .

Professional background

Merz worked for several years in the Baden state service at the water and road construction inspections in Emmendingen , Bonndorf and Bruchsal .

Merz left civil service and switched to the municipal gas works in Karlsruhe on June 23, 1883. In April 1889 he was appointed to head the gas works in Hanau , and in October 1893 to head the gas works in Kassel. Under his direction, the gas plant was built ready for operation and later a new electrical center was built and the waterworks expanded. He worked as a director until his death.

Publications, associations and personal matters

Emil Merz wrote a large number of publications in specialist literature as well as patents . For example, in the last 15 years of his life, he published 24 articles in the Journal for Gas Lighting and Water Supply.

Merz was involved in the German Association of Gas and Water Experts , was a member of several committees and was on the board of the Middle Rhine branch for many years. He was also on the board of the employers' liability insurance association.

Merz was born with Laura Bonnet married and had three children.
