Emma Walmsley (* 1969 ) is CEO of the British pharmaceutical manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline . She is considered the first woman to head a global pharmaceutical company. According to Forbes , she is number 17 on the list of the most powerful women in the world .

Life

Emma Walmsley was born in 1969 in Barrow-in-Furness in North East England . Her father, Sir Robert Walmsley, is a Vice Admiral in the Royal Navy . She has a Masters in Classics and Modern Languages ​​from the University of Oxford .

Walmsley initially worked for the cosmetics manufacturer L'Oréal for 17 years , including as a manager in Shanghai , before moving to GSK in 2010. She has been running the group since April 2017. Since September 2019 she has also been a member of the Board of Directors of Microsoft .

Walmsley lives in London, is married and has four children.
