Emmanuel de Margerie (diplomat)
Emmanuel Jacquin de Margerie (born December 25, 1924 , † December 2, 1991 in Paris ) was a French ambassador .
Life
His father was also the ambassador and great-nephew of Edmond Rostand . Emmanuel Jacquin de Margerie visited the French University of the Society of Jesus in Shanghai , the Sorbonne and earned a degree in Law at Sciences Po .
He married Helen de Margerie and their children were Gilles and Laure.
In 1951 he graduated from the École nationale d'administration and entered the foreign service. He was Embassy Secretary in London from 1954 to 1959. He was the first secretary in Moscow from 1959 to 1961. From 1962 to 1967 he headed the Eastern Europe department in the Foreign Ministry. From 1967 to 1972 he was accredited at the Ambassade de France au Japon in Tokyo with Ambassador Louis de Guiringaud .
From 1972 to 1975 he headed the European Department in the Foreign Ministry. From 1975 to 1977 he directed the French National Museum. He was involved in the creation of the Musée d'Orsay . He was Ambassador to Spain from 1977 to 1981 and Ambassador to Great Britain from 1981 to 1984. In 1990 he received a seat on the board of directors at Christie's and was named President of the World Monuments Fund in France.
