Emmanuel from Severus
Emmanuel von Severus OSB (* August 24, 1908 in Vienna as Rudolf von Severus ; † July 24, 1997 in Andernach ) was a Benedictine monk of the Maria Laach Abbey .
Life
Born as the son of an Austrian kuk field marshal lieutenant , he entered the abbey at Laacher See in 1928, the year he graduated from high school . The vows put Severus on December 26, 1929 and took the religious name Emmanuel on. He was ordained a priest on August 5, 1934. After studying Latin and history, Father Emmanuel was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . From 1948 to 1990, apart from brief interruptions, he was prior under three abbots and for almost thirty years he was also the monastery novice master . From 1958 to 1978 Severus edited the Archives for Liturgical Studies.
Severus gained international fame through lectures on spiritual issues and extensive literary work on scientific and spiritual subjects.
