The Emmauskirche is an Evangelical Lutheran church in the Potschappel district of the large district town of Freital ( Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district ). The building is named after the place Emmaus near Jerusalem. It is located in the center of the district near the Dresden – Werdau railway line . The Potschappler market is about 200 meters away.

history

It has been handed down since the 16th century that the village of Potschappel was parish in the neighboring (Upper) Pesterwitz . The believers in the village had to walk a relatively long and steep path to get to the church there. To remedy this situation, a private prayer room was first planned in the village. This original concept was expanded during the construction phase so that a complete church building was erected from 1875 to 1877 . The Dresden architect Christian Friedrich Arnold , who was responsible for the renovation of the Sophienkirche in Dresden, was involved in the construction.

The church consecration took place on April 22, 1877. On October 1, 1894, Potschappel broke away from the parish of Pesterwitz and formed its own parish, in which the village of Unterdölzschen was also a parish. The bronze bells consecrated with the consecration of the church were melted down during the First World War and replaced by chilled cast iron bells in 1919 .

On January 1, 1999, the parishes of the Emmauskirche Potschappel, the Lutherkirche Döhlen , the Christ Church Deuben , the Hoffnungskirche Hainsberg and the Georgenkirche Somsdorf founded the Ev.-Luth. Parish Freital.

The building was last renovated in early 2007. The interior of the church was kept in light colors. In addition, in 2009 the iron bells were replaced by a new bronze bell from the Lauchhammer art and bell foundry . Since then the tones f sharp ', a', c sharp ″ have been sounding from the bell chamber of the 29 m high tower. The three dismantled chilled cast iron bells were placed in the Freital-Potschappel cemetery.

On January 1, 2014, the parish united to Ev.-Luth. Parish Freital.

In March 2017, the wooden, meter-high altar cross with a porcelain crucifix and two porcelain chandeliers were stolen from the church , which were found a few weeks later near the church.
