Emmenopterys henryi is the only plant species of the genus Emmenopterys within the family of the Rubiaceae (Rubiaceae). She comes from southern China.

description

Emmenopterys henryi is an unreinforced, deciduous tree that reaches heights of up to 25 meters. The leaves are leathery and petiolate. The stipules are shed over time.

The flowers appear between June and August. The flowers are in terminal, umbrella-like inflorescences, at least one of the flowers of an inflorescence is accompanied by a white, foliage-like, persistent bract . The hermaphrodite flowers are fivefold. The chalice is ciliated and is thrown off. The five petals are white. The stylus is thread-shaped.

The woody capsule fruits contain a large number of seeds. The fine seeds are winged like a net. The fruits ripen between July and September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 76.

Occurrence

Emmenopterys henryi occurs in forests in southern and central China.

cultivation

In Europe there are few large specimens in some arboretums . It is sold in a few Dutch and German tree nurseries. The first copy was introduced in Europe in 1907. The first bloom in Europe was in 1971 in the arboretum of Villa Taranto on Lake Maggiore . The apparently first bloom in Germany began in July 2018 on Herford's city ​​wall in a private garden, as well as in the Arboretum Kalmthout in Belgium, where a 6 m high scaffold was built especially for the public.
