Emmy Wehlen
Emily "Emmy" Wehlen (born August 25, 1886 in Mannheim as Emmy Louise Weckesser; † 1977 ) was a German operetta singer and actress .
Life
Operetta singer
Emmy Wehlen was born in Mannheim. There she received her vocal training at the Mannheim Conservatory . After her training, Wehlen had first engagements at music theaters in Stuttgart , Berlin and Munich . At the Thalia Theater in Berlin she appeared together with the humorist Arnold Rieck . With Rieck she also recorded the record Without Men , a duet from the operetta Doctor Klapperstorch .
In 1909 Wehlen achieved his international breakthrough in London . At Daly's Theater she played the role of Sonia in an English version of the operetta The Merry Widow by Franz Lehár and the role of "Olga" in the operetta Die Dollarprinzessin by Leo Fall . This was followed by further appearances in music theaters in New York and London. In 1912 she played alongside Mae West in New York in the operetta A Winsome Widow at Loew's New York Theater . Her last operetta engagement was in 1915 on Broadway at the Shubert Theater . Emmy Wehlen's film career began immediately after her contract on Broadway expired.
Film actress
Emily Wehlen quickly became one of the stars of the US film production and film distribution company Metro Pictures Corporation . In parallel to her film appearances, however, she also continued to appear as a stage actress and operetta singer. In 1917, she starred alongside Harry Davenport in the film Sowers and Reapers . In the same year she appeared next to Louis Wolheim in the film The Belle of the Season . In 1918, she got the lead role in the film Sylvia on a Spree alongside Joseph Sweeney . In 1919 she was a film partner of Eugene Pallette in the silent film The Amateur Adventuress . By 1920 she appeared in 18 films, where she played the main role. After her last film, she returned to the operetta stage, but ended her career after a few years. Emmy Wehlen then disappeared from the public. Her further fate is not yet known.
