history

The Gronau (main) train station

The railway management decreed in 1906 that in Gronau, a new railway station and at the Buchholzstraße a signal box were to build, because it is at the train station in the center of Bergisch Gladbach is a terminal station concerned. As a result, the trains on the Cologne-Mülheim-Lindlar railway line first had to enter this terminus station in order to be able to continue in the other direction after setting the points and moving the locomotive .

After completion of the train station in Gronau and the corresponding track systems, the railroad rolled over the new route from January 4, 1912.

From now on, the new station in Gronau was also Bergisch Gladbach's passenger station. To distinguish it from the old train station and later also the Duckterath stop , which was also in Gronau, it was also called the Hauptbahnhof . The book Die Sülztalbahn says:

“The Bergisch Gladbacher Volkszeitung raved about the artistically designed interiors and the attractively designed building including forecourt in an article from January 4, 1912. In addition, the platform behind it was a lot higher than the reception building itself. Gronau was Bergisch Gladbach's official main station for almost 40 years . "

- Bernd Franco Hoffmann : The Sülztalbahn.

The term Hauptbahnhof was never part of the official station name; this was "Bergisch Gladbach". It had waiting rooms for first, second and third class, a ticket office and a baggage claim area. The station restaurant also served as a meeting point. It was operated until the late 1960s after the building was closed as a train station in 1965.

University of Applied Sciences for Business

The old Bergisch Gladbach passenger station was initially sold to a machine tool factory. After various temporary uses, the bib (then an education center for information processing professions ) with its headquarters in Paderborn (today's name: bib International College ) moved here in 1981 . In the following years, more buildings were built around the former station building, including a dormitory. The University of Applied Sciences for Business (FHDW) has also had a branch here since 1996 .

Belonging to different parts of the city

With effect from January 1, 1975, membership of the Gronau district was revoked. Since then, the former station building and the other school buildings to the east of the embankment have stood in the Stadtmitte district. All school buildings that were built west of the railway embankment, however, still belong to the Gronau district.

monument

The building was entered on October 18, 1983 as an architectural monument under No. 55 in the list of architectural monuments in Bergisch Gladbach .
