Endel Lippmaa

Endel Lippmaa (born September 15, 1930 in Tartu ; †  July 30, 2015 ) was an Estonian scientist and politician .

After graduating from high school in Tallinn in 1948, Lippmaa studied at the Tallinn University of Technology (TTÜ) until 1953 . In 1956 he became a candidate for science, which roughly corresponds to today's doctoral degree. From 1956 to 1961 he was a research associate and lecturer at Tallinn University of Technology. From 1961 to 1980 he was head of the physics department at the Institute for Cybernetics of the Estonian Academy of Sciences , then director and laboratory manager of the local Institute for Physical Chemistry and Biophysics .

Endel Lippmaa received his PhD in mathematical physics in 1969 from the Chemical-Physical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian SSR . In 1971 he became a professor of physical chemistry . Since 1993 he has been a professor at the University of Tartu .

Lippmaa headed the Physics and Astronomy Department of the Estonian Academy of Sciences in Tallinn . Since 2001 he has been the head of the Estonian Center for Excellence for Analytical Spectrometry .

Awards

Endel Lippmaa has received numerous national and international awards. In 1975 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Jyväskylä University and in 1991 an honorary doctorate from Tallinn University of Technology. In 1992 he was awarded the Max Planck Research Prize together with Günter Engelhardt .

Politician

Shortly before Estonian regained independence, Lippmaa also became politically active. From 1989 to 1991 he was a member of the Estonian delegation to the negotiations in Moscow . From April 1990 to January 1992 he was Minister without Portfolio in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Edgar Savisaar , where he was responsible for Ostpolitik. In 1995/96 he was Minister without Portfolio (European Integration) in the Cabinets of Prime Minister Tiit Vähi . From 1996 to 1999 Endel Lippmaa was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). At the same time he was a member of Tallinn City Council from 1993 to 1999.

Private life

Endel Lippmaa was married and had two sons.
