Endre Tóth (archaeologist)

Endre Tóth (born May 1, 1944 in Szombathely (Steinamanger), Vas County , Hungary) is a Hungarian archaeologist and historian who was director of the archaeological library of the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest . His areas of expertise include Roman provincial archeology and history of Pannonia, as well as the medieval kingdom in Hungary.

Life

Tóth was born to István Toth and Lujza Holy. From 1958 to 1962 he attended the Lajos-Nagy-Gymnasium in his hometown and then studied from 1963 to 1968 at the Philosophical Faculty of the Loránd-Eötvös University in Budapest . In 1969 he received his diploma as an archaeologist and historian, and in 1971 a doctorate .

Already in 1962/63 he was employed at the Savaria Museum in Szombathely. From 1968 to 1974 Tóth was employed as an assistant in the Archaeological Institute of the Hungarian National Museum and briefly changed from 1974 to 1975 as an assistant professor in the archaeological department of the Loránd Eötvös University. Between 1975 and 1985 he worked again in the archaeological sector of the National Museum before he was director of the archaeological library there from 1985 until his retirement in 2011. Tóth has held various teaching positions at several institutions, such as the University of Budapest, the University of Szeged and the Medieval Department and the Institute for Art History of the Péter Pázmány Catholic University .

In 1973 Tóth received an Italy scholarship and in 1976 he studied in Romania. He also gave lectures in Eastern and Western Europe. He has been President of the Panniculus Régiségtani Egylet ( Panniculus Society for Antiquities) in Szombathely since 1994 and a member of the Scientific Society in his hometown since 1999 . He has also been a member of the editorial board of the specialist journal Archaeologiai Értesítő (Archaeological Communications) since 2000 .

Endre Tóth's research areas include the provincial Roman archeology and history of Pannonia, including Roman military architecture and the Roman network of roads in Transdanubia, Roman culture and epigraphy , ancient and early medieval Szombathely ( Savaria ), the Hungarian coronation insignia and the royal Hungarian representation.

Tóth was also involved in excavations or directed them.

  • 1971 to 1979 at the late antique internal fortress of Ságvár .
  • 1981 at Limes watchtower 12 near Pilismarót-Basaharc.
  • 1981 to 1994 at the late antique inner fortress of Alsóheténypuszta. Tóth took over the work of Sándor Soproni there and continued it.
