Bálint Kuzsinszky

Bálint Kuzsinszky (also Valentin Kuzsinszky ; born November 6, 1864 in Szabadka , Kingdom of Hungary , † August 23, 1938 in Budapest , Hungary ) was a Hungarian archaeologist .

Live and act

Bálint Kuzsinszky studied classical philology at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Budapest and also studied archeology, numismatics and epigraphy . He took part in several study trips in Hungary and in Dalmatia , Austria , Italy and Germany . In 1887 he was at the excavations to Aquincum involved 1888 he was with a work about his doctorate . In 1890 he received a degree in his philological studies. His teachers included Jenő Ábel , József Hampel and Károly Torma . On the recommendation of Hampel and Torma, he became an apprentice in the coin and antiques department of the Hungarian National Museum in 1887 , and was employed there in 1889.

In 1894 he initiated the opening of the Aquincum Museum, of which he was director until 1937. In 1899 he was additionally entrusted with the administration of the Budapest City Museum, for which he worked until 1934; from 1899 to 1912 and from 1921 to 1934 he was director. He laid the foundation stone for the development of the Budapest History Museum .

From 1892 he taught at the University of Budapest, first as a private teacher for early cultural history and from 1901 for early world history . In 1911 he became an associate professor . After József Hampel's death in 1914, he took over his professorship for coin and antiquity . From 1923 to 1924 he was dean of the humanities faculty. In 1930 he retired .

In his teaching and research activities, he combined the classical history of the Roman Empire with provincial Roman archeology, in particular of the provinces of Pannonia and Dacia . He was mainly concerned with the Pannonian Limes , with Roman military camps , Roman pottery and Roman inscriptions .

Honors

In memory of Bálint Kuzsinszky, the Hungarian Archaeological and Art History Society has been awarding the “Bálint Kuzsinszky Medal” every year since 1941.

The archaeological library in the Aquincum Museum was named after him "Kuzsinszky Bálint Régészeti Szakkönyvtár". It comprises around 18,000 volumes, including works from the collection of Bálint Kuzsinszky, which his widow donated to the museum in 1939.
