description

The Engelnburg

The corner house at the intersection of Platz der Republik and Deweerthstrasse in the unusual architectural style of an iron house with a tower is popularly known as "Engelnburg" and has no relation to the medieval Engelnberg Castle .

Both parts of the building complex of the four-story house are connected to one another. It is provided with a structured plaster facade. The arched windows have partly received neo-Romanesque arched friezes and partly Gothic style elements.

At the corner, the building had a five-storey corner tower, which changes from a square floor plan on the fifth floor to an octagon and was provided with an octagonal buckled helmet . Both sides of the street are bordered on both sides with three-axis central projections and two end projections each and have three-storey oriels equipped with consoles.

The building has a gable roof and a roof terrace , the edge of the roof was originally crowned with battlements . A gable roof also covers the continuing two-storey side wing with the restaurant and bowling alley .

In the courtyard area, the building complex is flanked by a hexagonal staircase tower, which is accessed via an external staircase next to a garage.

history

The Engelnburg was built in 1900 by the road construction supervisor Karl Erb and was originally intended to be used as a hotel. The building was built on the relics of formerly intensive limestone mining on an Engelnberg, from which the so-called "fairy tale spring" originated; located directly on the "Osterfeld". From 1826 on, the Republic Square was used as a parade ground, where the Landwehr was drilled until 1919.

The house with restaurant was recognized as a monument on January 13, 1987 . The property with a land area of 528.00 m² with around 1,210 m² of living space was renovated by 2006 and offered for sale for 1.5 million euros.
