Enrico Arbarello (born November 26, 1945 ) is an Italian mathematician who deals with algebraic geometry.

Life

Arbarello (a former student of Emma Castelnuovo, the daughter of Guido Castelnuovo ) graduated from the University of Rome in 1969 and received his doctorate from Columbia University in 1973 with Lipman Bers (and Herbert Clemens) ( Weierstrass points and moduli of curves ). He was then until 1975 and from 1979 to 1981 assistant professor at Harvard University . From 1982 to 1996 he was professor of mathematics at the Sapienza in Rome. After that he was professor at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa until 2000 (the annali of which he also edited). He is currently again professor at La Sapienza University in Rome.

In 1993/94 and 2005 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study , 1983 at the École polytechnique (as Maître de recherche), 1984/85 and 1999 at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University , 1992 at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research , 1988 at MIT , 2004 at Columbia University and 1995 at the Institut Henri Poincaré in Paris.

He was busy u. a. with the module space of algebraic curves and its connection with mathematical physics ( Korteweg-de-Vries equation and KP equation ).

In 1986 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berkeley ( Periods of Abelian Integrals, Theta functions and differential equations of Korteweg-deVries Type ). He is a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and the Italian ( Accademia Nazionale delle Scienze ) and European Academy of Sciences . In 1986 he received the medal of the Italian Academy of Sciences. In 2006 he was a member of the Fields Medal Committee, which won the award and a. awarded to Grigory Perelman . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
