Enrique Fernández Arbós
Enrique Fernández Arbós (born December 24, 1863 in Madrid , † June 2, 1939 in San Sebastián ) was a Spanish violinist , conductor and composer .
life and work
Arbós studied violin first with Jesús Monasterio at the Madrid Conservatory , then with Henri Vieuxtemps at the Brussels Conservatory . In 1881 he completed his studies with Joseph Joachim in Berlin. In 1882 he became concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and performed both as a soloist and in a piano trio with Isaac Albéniz and Augustín Rubio . From 1894 to 1915 he was professor for violin and viola at London's Royal College of Music .
Shortly after founding the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid in 1904, Arbós took over its leadership, which he only resigned in 1936 as a result of the Spanish Civil War . At times he also worked as a guest conductor with various American orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra . In 1932 he directed the Spanish premiere of Igor Stravinsky's Le sacre du printemps .
The compositions by Enrique Fernández Arbós include the orchestral work Noches de Arabia , songs, the Zarzuela El centro de la tierra (premiered in Madrid in 1895) and pieces for piano trio. He also orchestrated parts from Iberia by Albéniz.
