Enteromius paludinosus ( Syn .: Barbus paludinosus ) is a small barb species that is widespread in large parts of East and South Africa. The distribution area extends from Ethiopia in the north over East Africa south to KwaZulu-Natal and extends south of the Congo Basin westwards to Angola. In the Congo Basin, Enteromius paludinosus occursin the Mwerusee , in the Luapula , in the upper Lualaba , in the Lufira and in the upper Lulua .

features

Enteromius paludinosus reaches a maximum length of 15 cm. The head is pointed, the body slender. There are usually two pairs of short barbels on the little mouth . The fish are olive gray on the back, silvery on the sides and belly. There is sometimes a dark vertical stripe on the sides of the body. The fins are colorless. The last unbranched fin ray of the dorsal fin is long, firm and serrated on its back.

Way of life

Enteromius paludinosus prefers stagnant or slow-flowing waters overgrown with plants. It feeds on insects, small crustaceans and snails, green algae and diatoms, and on detritus . The breeding season is in summer. The fish spawn between aquatic plants. The predators of the species include the African predatory catfish , Hydrocynus and Serranochromis species as well as water birds.
