He-Rich before the mountains of the High Atlas |
Er-Rich ( Arabic الريش; Central Atlas Tamazight ⴰⵔⵔⵉⵛ ) is a town with around 28,000 inhabitants in the Midelt province in the Drâa-Tafilalet region .
location
Er-Rich is located on the upper reaches of the Oued Ziz a good 75 km (driving distance) southeast of the provincial capital Midelt in the eastern foothills of the High Atlas at an altitude of approx. 1320 m . The cities of Errachidia and Erfoud are approx. 70 and 140 km away to the south. The climate is rather moderate because of the altitude; Rain (approx. 300 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter half-year.

The city's residents are almost exclusively of Berber descent; most of them only immigrated from the villages of the High and Middle Atlas in the last few decades . Various dialects of the Central Atlas Tamazight and Moroccan Arabic are spoken .
economy
While agriculture still plays the largest role in the villages in the area, Er-Rich has become a mercantile, artisanal, educational and administrative small town.
history
In the absence of written records, nothing is known about the older and medieval history of Er-Rich. Until the middle of the 20th century, Er-Rich was nothing more than a larger village, which was, however, near an old caravan route and the slope road built by the French that connected the date palm oases of Tafilalet ( Rissani / Sijilmassa ) with the urban centers of the north ( Fez , Meknes ).
Attractions
- The place itself has no historically or culturally significant sights. The town's houses, which are mainly made of hollow blocks , have concrete stairs, ceilings and flat roofs . They are plastered and have a bright red paint, which can be found almost everywhere in the small and medium-sized towns of southern Morocco.
- Surroundings
- The area is suitable for hiking or trekking tours in the mountains of the High and Middle Atlas (e.g. to Jbel Ayachi, about 35 km away ).
