Eragrostis intermedia is a plant from the genus love grass ( Eragrostis ) within the family of grasses (Poaceae). It is distributed from North to Central America , where it occurs from the southeastern and southwestern USA to Costa Rica . The species could also be found in South America. The TNC classifies Eragrostis intermedia as safe ("G5"). An English-language common name is plains lovegrass.

Vegetative characteristics

Eragrostis intermedia grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches stature heights of up to 90 centimeters, occasionally up to 100 centimeters. The simple leaves are up to 25 centimeters long.

Generative characteristics

The paniculate inflorescence has a pyramidal or egg-shaped outline. The spikelets each contain up to eleven flowers.

Generative reproduction takes place via the achenes or vegetative reproduction takes place from buds on the plant base.

Some bird species have been seen eating the seeds.

Site conditions

Eragrostis intermedia grows in barren grasslands , prairies , chaparral , shrub-steppes , pinyon ^a- juniper and oak- dominated forests. The grass is often found on dry slopes. It can easily colonize disturbed areas. The conditions are very good on sandy soil types and in areas with precipitation- controlled seasons with wet summers and winters. In its natural range, the grass is one of the first green plants in spring. An increase in abundance was observed after fires .

use

Eragrostis intermedia makes good forage for cattle , but is sensitive to overgrazing .
