Erasmus Rothmaler the Elder

Erasmus Rothmaler (* 1562 in Ilfeld ; † January 16, 1611 in Frankenhausen ) was a German Lutheran clergyman and preacher.

Life

Erasmus was the son of Sebastian Rothmalers, a grain writer from the Ilfeld monastery school . At the same school, Rothmaler mainly listened to the principal Michael Neander . He also attended school in Braunschweig and entered the third grade at the University of Erfurt in 1584 . In 1592 he was appointed to the Greußen school as cantor . The following year he was ordained in Leipzig to Schönstedt , where he served as pastor for two years.

In 1595 he was appointed as a deacon at St. Petri in Nordhausen , but in April 1597 he said goodbye after violent attacks against the pastor at St. Nikolai , Johann Pandocheus. In the same year Rothmaler was appointed archdeacon in Frankenhausen by Count Wilhelm von Schwarzburg .

Rothmaler married Maria Berich (1569–1611) from Ermstedt, a daughter of the pastor Johann Berichius, in October 1591. Of their sons, who were born in Frankenhausen, Erasmus Rothmaler the Younger was known as a clergyman and neo-Latin poet in Prussia and Johann Rothmaler as general superintendent in Rudolstadt. They also had four daughters, one of whom died in childhood.
