Friedrich Christian Lesser (born May 12, 1692 in Nordhausen ; † September 17, 1754 ibid) was a German Lutheran theologian and historian.

Life

Lesser, son of pastor Philipp Jacob Lesser (1656–1724), first studied medicine from 1712, but soon (under the influence of August Hermann Francke ) Protestant theology at the universities of Halle and Leipzig . In 1715, at the request of his father, he returned to his hometown and in 1716 took over a pastorate at the Frauenberg Church . In 1724 he also took over the administration of the Nordhausen orphanage. From 1741 he was pastor of the Church of St. Jacobi and organized the construction of the new church.

Lesser published numerous works on different subject areas, including a. the first printed chronicle of his hometown. He was particularly interested in " physical theology ", with which he tried to make use of scientific knowledge in the sense of the knowledge of God.

On December 8, 1735, Friedrich Christian Lesser , nicknamed Aristomachus, was accepted as a member ( matriculation no. 452 ) of the Imperial Leopoldine-Carolinian Academy of Natural Scientists and in 1744 he became a foreign member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .

In 1992 the Friedrich Christian Lesser Foundation was established, which primarily promotes historical research in Nordhausen and Northern Thuringia. The Historical Commission for Thuringia has been awarding the Friedrich Christian Lesser Prize annually since 2009 for associations that have made outstanding contributions to the history of Thuringia.

In Nordhausen there is a staircase called "Neue Lesserstiege" and since May 2017 a Lesserplatz.
