The giant steppe candle ( Eremurus robustus ), also called Cleopatran needle, is a type of plant from the genus steppe candle ( Eremurus ) in the subfamily of the Affodill family (Asphodeloideae).

features

The giant steppe candle is a perennial , herbaceous plant that forms a rhizome and reaches heights of 100 to 200 (300) centimeters. The leaves are keeled and gray-green. The inflorescence is 35 to 110 centimeters long. The bracts are drawn out long, triangular and ciliate with shaggy. The flower stalks are up to 35 millimeters long, protruding and almost horizontal even during the flowering period. The tepals have a length of 17 to 18 millimeters and are colored light pink, only at the base they are yellow. The outer ones are only half as wide as the inner ones. The capsule fruits are spherical, smooth and usually have a diameter of 20 to 25 (15 to 30) millimeters.

The flowering time is in June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14.

Occurrence

The distribution area includes Pamir-Alai and West- Tianschan . Here the giant steppe candle occurs on stony and fine earth slopes and often also in rose bushes at altitudes of 1600 to 3100 meters.

The giant steppe candle is used as an ornamental plant. It has been in culture since 1871 at the latest.
