The Erftlandring is a permanent outdoor go- kart track . It is located on the outskirts of the Kerpen district of Manheim on a former gravel pit in the vicinity of the Bürgewald Steinheide nature reserve . The route is 1,107 meters long and can be traveled in both directions. The owners of the track and the property are the racing friends Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips , Kart-Club Kerpen e. V. in ADAC and Michael Schumacher.

history

After barely three months of construction, the track opened in March 1980 as Germany's longest go-kart track. In the following year, the European kart championship took place on the newly built kart track . Further national and international championships followed.

Later stars like Ayrton Senna , Christian Fittipaldi , Mika Häkkinen and Allan McNish drove here . For many former and current Formula 1 racing drivers such as Michael Schumacher , his brother Ralf Schumacher , Heinz-Harald Frentzen , Nick Heidfeld and Sebastian Vettel , this club track was their home track.

Originally, the demolition of the Erftlandring was planned because the planned expansion of the Hambach lignite mine provided that both Kerpen-Manheim and the kart track would become an open-cast mining area. In February 2018, the annual general meeting of the Kerpen Kart Club decided to accept the compensation offer from RWE. Due to the sparing of the Hambach Forest by the opencast mine, confirmed in January 2020, the area of the kart track is no longer being excavated.
