2019
In the 2019 Mayor election, Deinege decided not to run again. In the first ballot on May 26, 2019, Franziska Schubert ran as a joint candidate for Bürger für Görlitz eV, Greens and Motor Görlitz, Jana Lübeck from Die Linke , Sebastian Wippel ( AfD ) and CDU member of the CDU, Octavian Ursu . Schubert received 27.9% of the votes, Ursu 30.3%, Wippel 36.4% and Lübeck 5.5%. In the city council election, which took place on the same day, the AfD candidate Wippel received over 17,000 votes, almost six times as many as the cross-party candidate with the second most votes.
Since none of the four candidates in the OB election immediately achieved an absolute majority of the votes, a second ballot was necessary. In the runoff election on June 16, 2019, Wippel and Ursu ran, the third-placed Schubert withdrew her candidacy in favor of Ursu, and Lübeck no longer ran. In the run-up, Hollywood actors, producers and Oscar winners addressed the voters of the city, which is known as the location for many films , in an open letter with the appeal “Do not vote for the AfD!” According to the preliminary final result, Ursu clearly won the runoff with 55.2 at 44.8%.
