Ergee was a German textile company, most recently based in Schrems in Lower Austria. It was one of the leading hosiery producers in Europe , but had to file for bankruptcy in November 2008 .

The name Ergee is an acronym for " E dwin R össler, GE lenau / E rzgebirge".

history

Ergee was founded in 1901 in Gelenau in the Ore Mountains , then Kingdom of Saxony , by Edwin Rössler. As early as 1910, the company had 30 employees and produced around 2000 children's socks per day. War supplies were made during the First World War . This is how socks were made from paper yarn . As a result, Ergee continued to grow and was already market leader in Germany in the years to come . In 1920 a new factory building was built in Gelenau. Ergee's first second company was opened in Falkenbach in Saxony in 1927 , with which Ergee employed 200 people for the first time in 1928. In the following years the company grew steadily, so that in 1938 it became the world market leader in the production of children's socks, which were exported to 60 countries around the world. The annual production was around 20 million pairs of children's socks. The plant in Gelenau was badly damaged during an air raid in World War II .

In 1949 the companies in Gelenau and Falkenbach were declared state- owned companies . Therefore, on July 30, 1949, Ergee was founded a second time by Emil and Werner Rössler as the Neustadt (Hessen) stocking factory . The new company headquarters was Sonthofen in Bavaria . As early as 1951, around 1,300 employees were producing 2.5 million pairs of women's fine stockings at the two locations. Well-known film stars such as Hildegard Knef or Romy Schneider made the stocking brand even more popular.

At the beginning of the 1960s, the workforce grew to 2,400 employees and Ergee-Textilwerke Schrems GmbH was founded together with the Michael Lohs knitted glove factory in Traunreut in Upper Bavaria . With the development of the Ergolan fiber, Ergee also built up a production facility for men's socks. However, other textile materials were also developed, such as Ergee-schwebeweich, a mixture of virgin wool and polyamide fibers . In the sponsorship area, Ergee acted as an outfitter, for example in a Swabian Himalayan expedition that conquered the Lhotse in 1977 . In 1979 the company was the official supplier of the Austrian ski teams . In 1987 Ergee was outfitter for the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf . In the 1990s, Ergee had production facilities in Germany, France , Malaysia , Austria and Switzerland and employed around 5,300 people. In the years that followed, research was carried out on new fibers on the one hand, and natural fibers on the other.

In 1997 the company struggled with problems and was taken over by the Federal Society for Industrial Policy Measures (GBI), which invested in the production facility together with Lower Austria .

In 2001 the German stocking manufacturer Vatter bought the company. In 2007 it had a turnover of 44.5 million euros . At the beginning of 2008, production was relocated to the Loana plant in Rožnov in the Czech Republic.

The search for a new investor was unsuccessful, so that the company had to file for bankruptcy in November 2008. At the time of filing for bankruptcy, only 197 people were employed.

At the end of January 2009 it became known that the textile discounter KiK was taking over the traditional stocking brand. KiK and the Vatter Group agreed not to disclose the purchase price. KiK only bought the brand and the finished goods store. KiK no longer produces Ergee textiles in Europe.

The speed skater Anni Friesinger has been the new brand ambassador for Ergee since June 1, 2015.
