Erhard Eylmann (born September 3, 1860 in Krautsand , † December 22, 1926 in Farge ) was a versatile German ethnologist and Australian researcher.

Life

Eylmann was the son of a wealthy farmer. He studied zoology and then medicine at the University of Freiburg , the University of Heidelberg , the University of Leipzig and the University of Würzburg . He received his doctorate in 1886. phil and in 1889 in Würzburg as Dr. med. He then lived in Cairo until 1884 and then studied geography and geology in Berlin .

Eylmann traveled to Australia several times , making his first major trip from 1896 to 1899. Eylmann was friends with Walter Baldwin Spencer and Francis J. Gillen . He made his last trip to Australia shortly before the First World War .

In his main work from 1908, The natives of the colony of South Australia , he describes the customs and culture of the natives he visited, the South Australian Aborigines , their sex life, burial, storage areas, sign language, dyes, hunting and fishing as well as diseases and their treatment. He also wrote two works about the bird world in South Australia around 1914. He also devoted himself to the subjects of religion and missions.
He moved to Farge in the early 1920s . He lost his fortune in the inflation in Germany of 1923. He had been employed by the Bremen wool combing mill in Blumenthal since 1921 . Eylmann continued his studies in Farge and hoped to visit Australia again. His work on begging in South Australia also falls during this period.

The Eylmannstraße in Bremen- Blumenthal , district Farge bears his name.
