Erhard Hiltner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erhard Hiltner (born May 24, 1893 in Tharandt ; † September 17, 1934 in Munich ) was a German agricultural scientist . From 1922 he worked at the Bavarian State Institute for Plant Production and Plant Protection in Munich. His main research interests were the nutritional physiology and the metabolic pathology of agricultural crops.

Life

Erhard Hiltner, Lorenz Hiltner's eldest son , attended grammar school in Munich and since 1913 studied agricultural and natural sciences at the Technical University and the University of Munich . In 1914 he volunteered for the army. After the end of the First World War he continued his interrupted studies and received his doctorate in 1922 at the University of Munich with a dissertation on the physiological effect of the nutrient element manganese on the growth of cultivated plants. From 1922 he worked at the Bavarian State Institute for Plant Production and Plant Protection in Munich. In 1929 he was appointed government councilor and on April 1, 1934, he was entrusted with the management of the biological department of this institution.

Above all, Hiltner has examined the relationships between soil and climate factors and the occurrence of physiological disturbances in agricultural crops. His contributions to tau research should be emphasized , in particular his findings on the physiological significance of water uptake by the aboveground plant organs. He continued the experiments carried out by his father in the fields of seed dressing and seed inoculation with new questions. The value of phenological observations for the practice of crop production was also an important field of research for him. Several of his works touch on questions of human health at the same time. His contribution, published in 1929, " Phenology and its significance for the climatic treatment of pollen allergy " is noteworthy . The complete list of his scientific publications comprises 58 titles, including several articles in manuals.

Hiltner died at the age of 42 from the effects of appendicitis and peritonitis.
