Erhard Olbrich

Erhard Olbrich (born April 22, 1941 in Mittelsteine ; † July 5, 2016 ) was full professor of psychology , especially developmental psychology , at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . He became known to the general public for his research on the psychology of the human-animal relationship. In that capacity, he was President of the International Society for Animal-Assisted Therapy.

Life

Erhard Olbrich studied philosophy , psychology and psychophysiology at the University of Bonn and psychophysiology at the University of California, Berkeley . In 1982/83 he was Armand Hammer Fellow at the Andrew Norman Institute for Advanced Studies in Gerontology, Los Angeles . Olbrich is a student of Ursula Lehr and Hans Thomae and had worked together with Andreas Kruse , Georg Rudinger and Reinhard Schmitz-Scherzer in the course of the Bonn gerontological longitudinal study . He has been appointed to a variety of bodies:

  • 1988–1992 member of the first expert commission for the preparation of the first report on the elderly of the German federal government
  • 1989–1998 member of the National AIDS Advisory Council
  • Member of relevant scientific organizations and advisory boards
  • From 1992 to 2002 scientific advisory board in the project “Das 3. Leben” of the SWR

After professorships in Giessen and Erlangen-Nuremberg, Erhard Olbrich has been retired since 2004. Since 2006 he has been President of the International Society for Animal-Assisted Therapy.

On the occasion of the deaths of Erhard Olbrich, Beate Fachinger and Reinhard Schmitz-Scherzer , an academic memorial service was held at the University of Bonn. The scientific work of Erhard Olbrich was honored under the aspect of the richness of the person-environment references (translations) .

Bonn gerontological longitudinal study

From 1972 to 1979 Erhard Olbrich was Academic Councilor and Academic Senior Counselor at the Pedagogical Seminar of the University of Cologne and the Psychological Institute of the University of Bonn. Erhard Olbrich is counted among those researchers who were actively involved in the internationally recognized and renowned Bonn Gerontological Longitudinal Study (BOLSA). He received his doctorate with a prize from the Rector of the University of Bonn and deepened his psychological knowledge through postgraduate training in client-centered psychotherapy .

University professor in Giessen and Erlangen-Nuremberg

In 1979 Erhard Olbrich was appointed to a professorship for developmental psychology at the University of Gießen and in 1983/84 was Dean of the Department of Psychology at the University of Gießen.

In 1984 he was offered the chair of psychology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . The main focus of the teaching was the development of the entire life course and educational psychology . In 1986, Olbrich co-founded the interdisciplinary postgraduate course in psychogerontology and from 1989–1991 was dean of the Philosophical Faculty I at the University of Erlangen.

In recognition of his outstanding scientific work on the human-animal relationship, a science prize was awarded in memory of Erhard Olbrich.

Erhard Olbrich has published around 200 articles in scientific journals and specialist books. He is (co-) author or editor of u. a. “Problems of adolescence” (1984), “Life-span and change in a gerontological perspective” (1985), “Aging - A lifelong process of social interaction” (1990), “Selection interviews with medical students” (1993), “Compendium of the Gerontology ”(1994),“ People need animals ”(2003).

Awards

Erhard Olbrich was awarded a prize in 1983 for promoting international gerontological cooperation .
