Reinhard Schmitz-Scherzer

Reinhard Schmitz-Scherzer (born April 22, 1938 in Krefeld ; † October 20, 2016 ) was a German psychologist , gerontologist , specialist author , writer , university lecturer and university professor .

Life

Schmitz-Scherzer passed the Abitur in Willingen / Waldeck . He then undertook studies in medicine , comparative religion , economics and psychology at the University of Bonn . In 1965 the diploma examination in psychology followed with very good . Schmitz-Scherzer was a student of Hans Thomae and Ursula Lehr . He did his doctorate and habilitation in Bonn .

After his retirement, Reinhard Schmitz-Scherzer first lived in Switzerland and then again in Germany . He was also engaged as a scientist and writer in retirement. In addition to his high scientific standards, it was important to him not to lose sight of the holistic approach , the practical application of scientific knowledge and the humane view of social gerontology. B. evidenced by his early plea for the establishment of hospices . Schmitz-Scherzer campaigned for the human rights and human dignity of older people who are in distress.

Gerontological research and teaching in Bonn and Kassel

Reinhard Schmitz-Scherzer carried out studies on issues relating to educational psychology , leisure research and gerontology. He belonged to the third generation of the Bonn Gerontological Longitudinal Study (BOLSA) , which was initiated by Hans Thomae. This scientific work was funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) , the BMJFG and the German Society for Leisure Time.

From 1982 to 1998 Schmitz-Scherzer held the chair for social gerontology at the University of Kassel .

Schmitz-Scherzer has worked in a large number of scientific committees, as a reviewer for the German Research Foundation (DFG), the VW Foundation, the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth and various other ministries , foundations and organizations in other European countries .

From 2002 he was head of the scientific advisory board of the futomat water dispenser and accompanied the research work initiated by futomat, which proves the special effectiveness of futomat water .

International gerontological research and teaching

As treasurer, Schmitz-Scherzer belonged to the narrow circle of organizers of the 12th International Congress of Gerontology in 1981 in Hamburg and was a member of the executive committee of the International Society for Gerontology . In this position, Schmitz-Scherzer worked on the development of the scientific program of the 13th International Congress of Gerontology in 1985 in New York and, in a similar role, also designed the 1st European Congress of Gerontology in England .

1989 was Schmitz-Scherzer in Santiago , Chile to work with colleagues from Chile gerontology as a subject at the Universidad de Chile to help establish. In 1995 a similar project followed at the PUCRS University in Porto Allegre in Brazil . This work was supported by the DAAD . He also established a cooperation with the Psychological Institute of the University of Granada .

Since his retirement , Reinhard Schmitz-Scherzer has been President of GERO - Gerontological-Economic Research Organization .

His students include the long-time rector of the Cologne Sports University , Walter Tokarski , university lecturers and professors such as Sabine Kühnert, Fred Karl, Bernhard Mann , Gerhard Naegele and Bernd Seeberger, as well as a large number of post-doctoral, doctoral and graduate social gerontologists, health scientists , psychologists , social pedagogues and sociologists and social managers , such as Birgit Jansen and the late social worker Helmut Braun.

Appreciation

On the occasion of the farewell to Reinhard Schmitz-Scherzer, Beate Fachinger and Erhard Olbrich , an academic memorial service was held at the University of Bonn. Well-known and important gerontologists such as Ursula Lehr , Fred Karl , Andreas Kruse , Gerhard Naegele and Georg Rudinger expressed their special appreciation for the scientific work of Reinhard Schmitz-Scherzer. The "psycho-social dimension of aging (transdisciplinarity)" should express the focus of the outstanding achievements of a scholar.

Awards

In 1975 Schmitz-Scherzer was awarded the Max-Bürger-Prize of the German Society for Gerontology and Geriatrics for his gerontological research.

In 1993 in Budapest he received a prize from the International Gerontology Society for special services to this society and gerontology.
