Walter Tokarski

Walter Tokarski (born July 1, 1946 in Leverkusen ) is a German university professor for sports policy and leisure research. From 1999 to May 19, 2014 he was rector of the German Sport University Cologne .

biography

After graduating from high school on the second educational path at the Cologne College , he studied economics, sociology and social psychology at the University of Cologne , where he graduated in 1974 with a degree in social science. In 1978 he received his doctorate with a thesis on "Aspects of work experience as factors in leisure time". rer. pol., also at the University of Cologne. In 1988 he completed his habilitation on the subject of "Leisure and Lifestyles of Older People" at the University of Kassel .

From 1963 to 1965, Walter Tokarski completed a commercial apprenticeship at Klöckner Humboldt Deutz AG in Cologne and then worked there as an employee. From 1978 to 1979 he worked as a research assistant at the IMW Institute for Market and Advertising Research in Cologne, before moving to the seminar for economic and financial policy at the Ruhr University Bochum and the chair of Peter Meyer-Dohm in 1980 . During his time in Bochum, he was also the deputy managing director of the pilot project "ITZ Innovation Promotion and Technology Transfer Center for Universities in the Ruhr Area" at the Ruhr University in Bochum. In 1982 he went to the University of Kassel as a research assistant for social gerontology in the department of social affairs, where he was employed at the chair of Reinhard Schmitz-Scherzer . From 1984 to 1990 he worked there as an academic councilor for social gerontology . Since 1990 he has been a university professor at the German Sport University Cologne. There he founded and headed the Institute for European Sport Development and Leisure Research from 1992 to 1999. From 1995 to 1999 he was Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and from 1999 to 2014 he was Rector of the German Sport University. Walter Tokarski focused on the topics of leisure science (leisure / popular sport), lifestyle research, time research, prevention and health, gerontology (sport and aging), international and European sport and leisure policy, racism and xenophobia as well as social problems in sport.

Honors

Walter Tokarski has been an honorary professor at Shandong Sport University ( China ) and Sofia National Sport University ( Bulgaria ) since 2005 . He has also been an honorary professor at Shanghai Sport University (China) since 2002. In 2003 he received the Silver Medal from Charles University in Prague for his services to sport in Europe. In 2002 he was honored by the Polish National Olympic Committee for special services to Polish sports science. In 2015 he received the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class from Prime Minister Hannelore Kraft . In 2018 he was awarded the NRW Sports Badge for his services to North Rhine-Westphalian sport by Prime Minister Laschet.

Engagement outside the university

Walter Tokarski is involved in the prevention alliance, on the board of the Laureus Foundation "Sport for Good" Germany / Austria, on the scientific advisory board of the Christian Youth Village (CJD) and on the board of trustees of the NRW Sportstiftung. He is economic ambassador for the city of Cologne and the Rhein-Erft district and works in various committees at local, national and international level. In addition, he is involved in continuing education and training in sports medicine.

Walter Tokarski is married, has two daughters and lives in Kerpen .
