Éric Barbier (born June 29, 1960 in Aix-en-Provence ) is a French director and screenwriter who realized several cinema productions, including Höllenglut , Die Schlange and 137 Karat - An almost perfect coup .

life and career

Éric Barbier, born in 1960 in Aix-en-Provence in the French Bouches-du-Rhône department , attended the renowned Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IHDEC) in Paris from 1979 , where he made several short films, including Saint merry La malediction (1980) , Sanghaï (1981) or La face perdue (1982). It was there that he met the directors and scriptwriters Eric Rochant (* 1961) and Arnaud Desplechin (* 1960), who were roughly the same age . In 1991, as an independent filmmaker with Maruschka Detmers and Jean-Marc Barr in the leading roles , he then directed the French cinema drama Höllenglut , which thematized the life of Polish immigrants in the coal mines in northern France during the 1930s. In 1991, Barbier won the coveted Jean Vigo Prize for best director for his film . He wrote the script together with his brother Jean-Pierre Barbier. With the Spanish-French co-production Toreros , cast by Olivier Martinez and Claude Brasseur , a drama about the life of a bullfighter emerged in 2000. In 2006 Barbier finally realized the cinema production Die Schlange , with Yvan Attal , Clovis Cornillac and Pierre Richard in the leading roles of the psychological thriller . Barbier wrote the screenplay for the film based on a novel by British writer Ted Lewis.

In 2014, Barbier created another cinema production with the drama 137 Karat - An Almost Perfect Coup with the cast of Yvan Attal , Bérénice Bejo and Jean-François Stévenin . To this end, his younger brother, the composer Renaud Barbier (* 1969) , contributed the film music, as he did before in his cinema productions Toreros and Die Schlange , and later also in Early Promise (2017).
