Eric Burdon Declares “War” is the debut album by the British-American band Eric Burdon & War , which was released in 1970. The album with a mixture of jazz , blues and soul, the voice of Eric Burdon and a rhythmic background was very popular with the audience and led to a great commercial success. The motto “We the People, have declared war against the People, for the right to love each other” was written on the cover.

History of origin

Eric Burdon founded War with Lee Oskar right after the end of New Animals . Burdon had little interest in the musical style of his ex-band and sought musical fulfillment in soul and jazz. The rest of the cast consisted of the bands Creation and Night Shift , who often performed in Watts (Los Angeles) . Burdon's managers Jerry Goldstein and Steve Gold made contact. The band went on tour under the name Eric Burdon & WAR before releasing an album. With the new band, Burdon relied on a mixture of soul, jazz and blues with a strong percussive touch.

Music genre

The album opens with a slow, haunting piece, The Vision of Rassan, which pays tribute to Rahsaan Roland Kirk and reflects the group's musical roots in the blues and jazz of Kirk, Charlie Parker and John Coltrane . The second track, Tobacco Road , - a blues-rock-oriented cover version of the folk classic by John D. Loudermilk - is a metaphor of a life in dirt and poverty on Tobacco Road and a desire to change circumstances.

Spill the Wine is a Latin American hit withanerotic touch ("Pour the wine away, take the girl ...") and became the group's first major success, making it to number 3 on the US charts. The trigger is said to have been a bottle of wine spilled over a mixer by Lonnie Jordan, which forced the band to change studio and inspired Burdon to the title.

Blues for Memphis Slim is grouped around the blues standard Mother Earth (written by Memphis Slim). While the band drives a slow blues, Burdon tells of sex, birth, death and morals. The piece contains solos by Charles Miller and Lee Oskar. Burdon let the band members do the vocals for the fifth song You're No Stranger , which was only two minutes long and worn .
