Eric Rosen (born September 3, 1993 in Evanston , Illinois ) is an American International Chess Champion (IM) . He gained worldwide fame as a web video producer for instructional videos and online chess on Youtube and Twitch .
Life
Rosen grew up in Skokie , a suburb of Chicago . He learned the rules of chess at the age of seven. Two years later, he won an Illinois state school tournament . He received professional training at an early age, including from Tamara Golovey, Dmitry Gurevich , Yury Shulman and Mesgen Amanow . In 2007 he achieved a national score over 2000 points for the first time and won the US Junior Open in Milwaukee in 2009 . In the same year he became National Champion of the United States Chess Federation . In 2011 he won the national " K-12 Championship " (for high school visitors) and made the 1st IM standard at the U18 World Cup in Caldas Novas . Rosen fulfilled the second IM norm in 2013 at the North American Masters in Skokie, and in 2015 he secured the 3rd IM norm at the Philadelphia Open with a 1st place in the U2400 player category. Shortly afterwards, he met a fourth IM standard at the Chicago Open and achieved his highest FIDE rating to date with 2423 in June 2015 . In the United States Chess League , Rosen played for Chicago Blaze from 2009 to 2011 .
In 2015–17, Rosen successfully completed a bachelor's degree in " Interactive Digital Media " at Webster University ( Missouri ) . There he also played for the top-class and internationally successful university team SPICE (" Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence "). After graduating, he started working as a freelancer , including as a chess teacher, chess photographer and web video producer. Rosen lives today (2019) in St. Louis .
Trivia
Eric Rosen won at least twice against the reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen in online chess. In the first game of bullet chess (1 + 0), Carlsen played anonymously under a new account, and Rosen only found out afterwards who his opponent was. This success brought Rosen to the front page of the social news portal Reddit on November 17, 2018 . Rosen won the second game in February 2019 in the chess variant Chess960 with a time limit of 2 + 1. At the beginning of July 2020, it reached 100,000 subscribers on YouTube.
