Erich, Duke of Mecklenburg , sometimes wrongly Erich I (* after 1359 ; † July 26, 1397 in Visby ) was Duke of Mecklenburg .

family

Erich was the eldest son of Albrecht III. and Richardis , a daughter of Count Otto von Schwerin . He was probably born in 1365.

He married on 12/13. February 1396 Sophie, the daughter of the Pomeranian Duke Bogislaw VI. He had no children with her.

Life

His father made a new attempt in 1386 to secure the royal power in Sweden for himself. The Danish Queen Margaret I intervened and defeated Albrecht in 1389 in the battle of Åsle near Falköping . Erich was captured together with his father. The two were held prisoner for six years in the Lindholmen Castle in Skåne . Approval in 1395 took place after three years of negotiations with the participation of Lübeck's mayors Hinrich Westhof and Johann Niebur .

In 1395, Erich was commissioned by his father to recapture Gotland. In the summer of 1396 he landed with troops on Gotland and in the spring of 1397 defeated Sven Sture , who consequently had to take a feudal oath to Erich. In the same year the union of the kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden was sealed with the Kalmar Union under the reign of Queen Margarethe. Erich died of the plague in Visby in 1397 and was buried in St. Mary's Church in Visby on Gotland.
