Erich Greipl (born September 2, 1940 in Passau ; † July 2, 2013 in Munich ) was considered one of the most influential trade managers in Germany.

Life

After graduating from high school and doing military service , he studied business administration from 1963 to 1967 at the Ludwig Maximilians University . He received his doctorate in 1972 . From 1968 to 1981 he worked as a research assistant at the Ifo Institute in Munich . In 1982 he became Marketing Director at coop AG , 1986 member of the management of the wholesale group Metro Cash & Carry , since 1995 member of the management of the parent company Metro Vermögensverwaltung GmbH & Co. KG, Düsseldorf . He was a member of the supervisory boards of Metro AG and Kaufhof AG, managing director of OB Betriebs GmbH, which is majority owned by the Metro group, and member of the board of the Prof. Otto Beisheim Foundation in Munich. As such, he was chairman of the WHU foundation, which runs the WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management .

Greipl was also Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Duales System Deutschland GmbH, President of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce for Munich and Upper Bavaria, President of the Regional Association for Wholesale and Foreign Trade, Sales and Services Bavaria (LGAD), Vice President of the Main Association of German Retailers , Vice President of the Federal Association of German Wholesale and Foreign Trade , Vice-President of the Association of Bavarian Business , Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bavarian Credit Guarantee Association , Member of the Board of Trustees of the Ifo Institute for Economic Research, Munich, Deputy Chairman of the Working Group Packaging and Environment e. V., Berlin. From 2004 to 2013 he was President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Munich and Upper Bavaria .

Greipl has been an honorary professor at the University of Mannheim since 1990 . The Technical University of Dresden awarded him the Dr. rer. pole. hc On December 21, 2005, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by WHU in Vallendar.
