Life

Erich Sternberg was born as the only child of the businessman Jacques Sternberg and his wife Agnes and grew up in Schöneberg b. Berlin on. He passed his Abitur at the Werner Siemens Realgymnasium , where he met his lifelong friend Heinrich Schulte . He then studied medicine at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin and the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and received his doctorate in Berlin in 1925 (dissertation: Currents in the simple gutter and their significance for stimulus physiology).

Sternberg began to publish scientifically as a student, supported by Arthur Kronfeld , who published his own work with him in 1927. Sternberg then began his specialist training with Karl Bonhoeffer at the Charité and initially continued it in the neurological department of the Hufeland Hospital of the municipal insane clinics in Berlin-Buch . Then he worked until 1933 as an assistant at a psychiatric and nervous clinic in Dresden .

Through the mediation of the health department of the League of Nations in Geneva , Sternberg is said to have found a job in Moscow, so that he emigrated to the Soviet Union with his mother and first wife in 1933 . Later he worked at the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute of the USSR Pyotr B. Gannushkin . There he contributed to Arthur Kronfeld also applying to this institute and receiving a research professorship in 1936. In the course of the Great Terror , Sternberg was arrested in the same year by the Soviet secret police GPU and sentenced by an NKVD court to camp imprisonment in Siberia .

After Stalin's death , he was rehabilitated (1989) and made a prominent geriatric psychiatrist in the Soviet Union.
