Erich Rümmler

Erich Rümmler (born April 17, 1930 in Pockau ; † May 30, 2006 in Berlin ) was major general of the Ministry for State Security (MfS) and head of the minister's working group (AGM).

Life

Erich Rümmler was born in Pockau ( Marienberg district ) in 1930 . His father was a glazier, his mother a housemaid. After attending elementary school , he completed an apprenticeship as a woodworker from 1944 and worked as such until 1948. In 1947 Rümmler joined the SED . In 1948 he was employed by the People's Police and in 1951 moved to the MfS Main Department (HA) I (VP readiness). In 1961 he attended the pre-study faculty in Naumburg and then from 1962 to 1964 the military academy "Friedrich Engels" , where he obtained the title of diploma military scientist. In 1964/65 he completed an internship as deputy chief of staff in the 7th motorized rifle regiment of the NVA , which earned him a promotion to deputy head of department. In 1966 Rümmler was appointed head of department in HA I (military defense). In 1968 he moved to AGM as a department head. There he worked his way up to the deputy director until 1980, was appointed major general in October 1983 and finally the first deputy director. In 1987 he took over the complete management of AGM. As such, he was responsible for all mobilization tasks in the MfS, in particular internment planning and the training and deployment of special forces for special operations as well as the management of officers in special operations (OibE). In the course of the fall of the Wall in the GDR , Rümmler was released from his position in December 1989 and then released in January 1990. Erich Rümmler lived as a pensioner in Berlin until his death.
