Erich Wintermantel (* 1956 in Tuttlingen ) is a German doctor and engineer who focuses on the development of biocompatible implants as well as medical technology and plastics technology. From 2000 to 2016 he was full professor of medical technology at the Technical University of Munich .

biography

Wintermantel grew up in his hometown Tuttlingen and graduated from high school in 1975. After studying medicine at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen , he worked as a research assistant at the Canadian University of Western Ontario in London (Ontario) , the University of California, Los Angeles , the Université de Montréal and the Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse . He completed his clinical training at various university clinics in the fields of neurosurgery , abdominal and orthopedic surgery , before joining the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich as a scientific adjunct / lecturer in 1986 , where he completed his habilitation in 1991 and was appointed private lecturer has been. In 1992 he was appointed associate professor and full professor for biocompatible materials and construction methods in 1995. Prior to that, he spent two years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Robert Langer's group in the Department of Chemical Engineering on the development of degradable polymers and drug delivery systems. As head of the institute from 1995 to 2000, he headed the Institute for Design and Construction at the ETH Zurich and dealt intensively with fiber composite technologies.

From 2000 to 2016, Wintermantel was full professor of medical technology at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Munich. In the same year he founded the Central Institute for Medical Technology at the Technical University of Munich (ZIMT) and, together with 60 lecturers from nine faculties at the Technical University of Munich, set up the first master’s course in medical technology at a scientific university in Germany. In 2003 he founded ITEM GmbH as a technology transfer company and as a partner of the central institute. His current focus is on process technologies for biocompatible materials, their applications in implants and the development of plastics technology for the life sciences. He is the editor and author of a standard work on medical technology.

In 2008, Wintermantel took third place in the "Professor of the Year" competition organized by the UNICUM Stiftung gGmbH in the engineering and computer science category . In 2010 he received the “Golden Teaching” award from the Mechanical Engineering Student Council for the lecture “Basics of Medical Technology: Biocompatible Materials I” for the best lecture in the mechanical engineering major at the Technical University of Munich.

In 2013 Erich Wintermantel received the Dr. Richard Escales Prize 2013, awarded by Carl Hanser Verlag on the occasion of the world's largest plastics fair, K2013, Düsseldorf. The Dr. Richard Escales Prize is a media prize that is awarded every three years for exceptional achievements in imparting specialist knowledge of plastics technology. Prof. Wintermantel received the award for the unique communication performance between the fields of medicine and plastics technology.

Wintermantel has been a member of the Future Council of the Bavarian Economy ( vbw ) since May 2014 .
