Erik Ågren (boxer)

Erik Alfred Ågren (born January 3, 1916 in Ytterselö , Strängnäs municipality , † July 3, 1985 in Hägersten ) was a Swedish boxer . He won the bronze medal in the lightweight at the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 and was vice European champion in 1939 in Dublin in the welterweight division.

Career

Erik Ågren started boxing as a teenager with his brothers Oskar, Carl and Ture. He boxed for Narva BK . His coach there were Olof Johansson and in the Swedish national team, in which he was soon promoted, Arvid "Lunkan" Lundquist.

As a 20-year-old newcomer nicknamed “Jerka”, he qualified in 1936 to take part in the Olympic Games in Berlin. He started there in the lightweight. In his first fights he won on points over Lorenzo Delgado, Mexico , Mario Facchin, Italy and Andrew Scrivani from the USA . In the semifinals he met Nikolai Stepulov from Estonia and lost just on points. In the battle for the bronze medal, which was still being boxed out at the time, he won without a fight over Poul Kops from Denmark .

In 1937 Erik Ågren also started at the European Championships in Milan . He was back in the lightweight and defeated the Olympic champion from Berlin Imre Harangi from Hungary clearly on points in his first fight . In the quarterfinals he lost to Herbert Nürnberg from Germany and didn't get a medal.

In 1938, on the occasion of an international match between Sweden and Germany in Stockholm, he won a point over the strong Heinrich Heese from Düsseldorf . In an elimination tournament for the European boxing team, which was supposed to travel to the United States for comparative matches, he lost to Herbert Nuremberg in 1938 in Berlin by knockout in the first round.

In 1939 Erik Ågren was at the welterweight championship at the European Amateurs Championship in Dublin. He won there in the quarterfinals over Konstantins Tjasto from Latvia by knockout in the first round and defeated Robert Thomas from England on points in the semifinals . In the final he was defeated by Antoni Kolczyński from Poland and won the European Championship silver medal .

In 1940 Erik Ågren represented Europe on a competition trip to the USA . He boxed there twice. In Chicago he lost to Savior Canadeo on points and in Nashville he won over Charles Easley on points. Erik Ågren was also in Stockholm in 1941 in the Swedish team against Germany and won there in the lightweight over Horst Garz from Magdeburg on points.

Erik Ågren was the Swedish lightweight champion from 1937 to 1941. In 1942 he lost in the welterweight final against Börje Wretman on points.
