Erik Wilhelm Grafarend (born October 30, 1939 in Essen ) is a German geodesist and professor emeritus at the University of Stuttgart . He has contributed significantly to the modern mathematical methods of geodesy , the equalization calculation and the multidimensional spaces. In professional circles he is u. a. known for his original way of thinking and his extravagant clothes.

resume

Grafarend studied until 1964 Mine Surveying (in mining, surveying and mapping) at the Technical University of Clausthal-Zellerfeld . He then studied geophysics and physics until 1968 . After receiving his doctorate in 1966, he worked at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Clausthal-Zellerfeld (1966–1968) and later at the Institute for Theoretical Geodesy at the University of Bonn , where he completed his habilitation in 1971 and was appointed professor the following year. Important stations of the scientist were also 1972/1973 the Department of Geodetic Science of the Ohio State University in Columbus (USA) and at the Geodetic Institute of the University of Uppsala in Sweden. In 1975 he followed a call to the chair for astronomical and physical geodesy at the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich in Neubiberg, Bavaria .

From 1980 Erik W. Grafarend headed the Geodetic Institute of the University of Stuttgart as successor to Karl Ramsayer . His main areas of work were physical geodesy , satellite geodetic positioning in geometry and weight space, mathematical statistics, as well as adjustment calculation and geodetic network design . He has published several books and well over 200 scientific papers.

His honors include the Bomford Prize (1975) from the International Association for Geodesy , the Senior Scientist Award (1978) from the US Academy of Sciences and honorary doctorates from the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Surveying at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich, the Royal Technical University of Stockholm / Sweden (1989), the Technical University of Darmstadt (1996) and the Technical University of Budapest / Hungary (1998).

He is a member of the Leibniz Society of Sciences in Berlin and has been an external member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences since 2010 .

Erik W. Grafarend retired in 2005, but continues to work in geodetic research. Several top international researchers (such as Fernando Sansò and Reinhard Rummel ) contributed to the celebratory colloquium on the occasion of his retirement, as did former Grafarends students who have since been appointed professors.
