Erik Hoffmann (* 1952 in Leoben / Styria in Austria ) is an Austrian painter of realism . He works in Lilienthal near Worpswede and on Barra in Scotland .

life and work

Erik Hoffmann grew up with his grandparents in Styria. At the age of four, he and his grandmother visited his parents in Caracas , Venezuela . After returning home to Austria, years of illness from a virus infection followed. Long walks in nature that his grandfather took with him contributed to his recovery. In later years he exchanged the narrowness of the mountains and valleys of his childhood for the wide, open nature of the Scottish Hebrides.

Hoffmann studied free painting from 1975 to 1981 at the Kassel Art College . He was given a teaching position in portrait painting from 1981 to 1982. He received support through a number of renowned grants and prizes. In 1993 he became the father of a son. He has been married to Gabriele Schmid since 2004.

Hoffmann is a realistic portrait and landscape painter . He paints portraits embedded in places and landscapes that do not exist in reality, but are constructions of a reality that Hoffmann has developed in nature studies. He pays his respects to the Canadian realists Ken Danby and Alex Colville . He uses tempera as paint .

His literary role models are Sir Edward Montague Compton Mackenzie and William Wordsworth .
