Erik XI. , called "the Lispelnde and Lahme" ( Erik Eriksson läspe och hold , * 1216 , † February 2, 1250 ), was King of Sweden . Erik was shortly after the death of his father Erik X. born.

Life

In the year after Erik was born, Pope Honorius III wanted . appoint him as king, but the Swedish nobility preferred John I , who at the age of 15 could at least formally make his own decisions. Erik's mother Rikissa then went to Denmark with the toddler at the court of her brother Waldemar II.

Erik XI. was elected king after John's death in 1222 at the age of six and was crowned king in Strängnäs on July 31, 1224 at the latest . Sweden was then headed by a Reichsrat , the first time that this institution is mentioned. It was partly led by Bishop Bengt von Skara († 1228), partly by a certain Knut Holmgersson, who is believed to have been a brother of Erik the Holy . He could also have been of the Folkunge sex. This Knut instigated a revolt against Erik and defeated him in 1229 in the Battle of Olustra ( Södermanland ). Erik was overthrown and fled to Denmark. A member of the council, Knut Långe , took his place. After Knut Lång's death in 1234, Erik was able to return to the throne, but he could not prevail against Knut's mighty Jarl Ulv Fase. Ulv died in 1247, but even under his successor, his powerful brother-in-law Birger Jarl , Erik remained a weak king who did not take part in the government.

An important church assembly fell during his reign around 1248. The Pope was represented by his envoy Wilhelm von Sabina . It was a reform synod which, among other things, banned the marriage of priests and introduced celibacy .

Erik XI. was married to Katarina Sunesdotter from the Bjälbo family († 1252), but the marriage remained childless. With him died Erik sex from. After his death, Katarina retired to Gudhem Monastery .
