Erkin Alptekin

Erkin Alptekin ( Uighur ئەركىن ئالپتەكىن; * July 4, 1939 in Lanchow , Gansu , Republic of China ) is a Uighur politician in exile and the son of the independence activist İsa Yusuf Alptekin, who died in 1995 .

In 1949, when the communists came to power in Xinjiang, Erkin Alptekin emigrated with his parents to Indian Kashmir . In 1971 Alptekin began working for Radio Liberty, which operates in Munich , but left this post when the division for the Uyghur minority in the Soviet Union was discontinued in 1979.

From 1985 Alptekin was active in the "Allied Committee of the Peoples of East Turkistan, Tibet and Inner Mongolia", which was founded in that year. In 1998 the US government allowed the first conference of the committee at Columbia University in New York City . Members of the Clinton administration and the US Congress also attended the conference.

For a time he headed the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO), founded in 1991 , of which he is one of the founders. In 1992 he founded the "Movement for the Liberation of Uyguristan" in Kazakhstan, where a large part of the Uyghur diaspora (approx. 300,000 people) live. After his expulsion from Kazakhstan in 1994, Alptekin founded the "East Turkestan Union in Europe" in Munich.

From 2004 to 2006 he was the first president of the World Uyghur Congress founded in Munich . He was replaced by Rebiya Kadeer .

Erkin Alptekin is married and has two children. He lives in Würzburg .
