The Erkrath-Gathemann-Prince-building complex is a 1910 or 1913 built and 1927/28 expanded ensemble of buildings at the Independence Avenue in the Namibian capital Windhoek . These are the most striking buildings from the times of German South West Africa and South West Africa on Windhoek's main street.
The facade was initially registered as a national monument on May 22, 1987 . The monument protection was not extended.
Today (as of February 2020) all three buildings have retail stores on the ground floor and offices on the upper floors. The Gathemann gourmet restaurant was also located here until the end of 2016 .
history
The Erkrath building was founded in 1910 as the headquarters of the Purchasing and Sales Cooperative (Pty) Ltd. built. It was the first sandstone building of its kind in the country. In 1913 this was supplemented by the Gathemann building , which served the mayor of Klein Windhoek , Heinrich Gathemann , as the headquarters of his company. During the times of South West Africa, the Gathemann building was extended by an extension in 1927/28. Architect Wilhelm Sander is responsible for the building .
The third building in the ensemble, the Kronprinz building, housed the Hotel Kronprinz of the same name at the beginning of the 20th century . It was planned by Max Gartze .
The buildings have been owned by the Namibian architect Rynand Mudge since 1994. In 2017, the building complex was refurbished true to the original by the owner.
